But underneath the headlines are the real mechanics: which hubs are growing, what developers actually earn, and where the friction still is.

  • Remote work pull. When a developer in Nairobi can earn a global rate, the incentive to invest in the skill is enormous.

  • The senior gap. The market's biggest complaint is still the shortage of engineers who have shipped production systems at scale.
  • Payments and infrastructure. Cross-border payment friction and, in some markets, unreliable infrastructure still add cost to global work.
  • The gig vs career question. Too much of the market is still short-term gigs rather than career development paths with mentorship.
  • Funding dependency. Many hubs remain dependent on donor or investor cycles rather than sustainable revenue.
  • None of these are fatal, but they shape where the opportunity is. The companies and ecosystems solving the senior gap and building sustainable models are the ones compounding.
